The local culture is the food, the literature, the theater, film. There is so much in a local culture to really experience as well as the people themselves. So, first off, sit back, watch. Watch how the people behave, watch how they interact with each other. Watch how they line up for things or they do not line up. Just watch how things are done, and that will give you some experience with the local culture. But then to go into the more formal culture, get tickets to the theater. Why not? Get out! Go to see an opera that you would not otherwise go to. You may never go to opera at home, but go to it there. And I always try to go to a bookstore that sells English books. There is usually in most major cities around the world an English bookstore. Go in and ask for the local author, the national author, that has been translated into English. And then you will be going in and exploring that culture through the literature of the people.
